A sensible first ninety days of SEO

8 min read

Three months is long enough to fix the things holding a site back and short enough that guesswork shows. The order matters more than the effort: work done in the wrong sequence often has to be redone.

This is the shape of a first ninety days that tends to hold up.

Weeks one and two: establish what is true

Before changing anything, record the current position. Which pages are indexed, which queries already bring traffic, what Search Console reports, and how the site is currently structured. Without this you cannot later distinguish a change you made from a change in the market.

Weeks three and four: clear the blockers

Fix the issues that prevent indexation or split a page across several URLs. These are the cheapest wins available and they make every later measurement cleaner. Deploy them together rather than one at a time so a recrawl covers the lot.

Weeks five to eight: on-page and intent alignment

With the foundation sound, work through the pages that already rank somewhere respectable but not well. Titles, headings, internal links and content that answers the query more completely. Pages already on the second results page respond faster than pages with no visibility at all, which is why they come first.

Weeks nine to twelve: build what is missing

Only now is it worth commissioning new content, because by this point you know which queries you can realistically compete for and which pages already carry weight to link from.

What a realistic ninety-day result looks like

What it does not look like is a competitive head term moving to the first page. That happens over quarters, not weeks, and anybody promising otherwise is describing something other than SEO.

  • Indexation problems resolved and confirmed by recrawl
  • Measurable movement on queries where the site was already close
  • A prioritised backlog for the next quarter, based on evidence rather than assumption
  • Early trend data on new content, which will not yet be conclusive
